Book Reviews of Voyager (Outlander)

Book Review: Enjoyed as much as the others in the series
Summary: 4 Stars

In Voyager Gabaldon continues the Outlander saga of 20th-century physician Claire Randall and 18th-century rebel Jamie Fraser. The book begins 20 years after the last book left off. Jamie is imprisoned, and once he's pardoned he buys a printing business. Believing that Jamie died at Culloden, Claire returns to her own century. She is reunited with her first husband and gives birth to a daughter, Brianna. When Claire's first husband's dies she takes Brianna to Scotland to introduce her to her true heritage. After some research they discover that Jamie survived the battle at Culloden. Claire decides she must find Jamie and once again steps through the stones on Craigh na Dun to find Jamie in Edinburgh in 1766. Once reunited Jamie and Claire want to lead a quiet life, but the kidnapping of Jamie's nephew throws the couple into a new pursuit.

I enjoyed Voyager as much as I enjoyed the other books in the Outlander Series. I've already started the Drums of Autumn the 4th book in the series.

Book Review: Why bother
Summary: 1 Stars

This book is so poorly researched that it's a crying shame. The history of the time could have made up for poor plot lines, no backbone and sheer boredom. At least if the historical storylines are accurate you can get caught up in "believing" in the story. But in this case this, the lack of research is glaringly evident.

One quick example. At one point Claire asks a character when he was born. 1713 is the answer. Claire than says something about betting her clothes on the chance that 1713 was the Year of the Rat. OK, so Chinese New Year is in February. Ms. Gabaladon had two chances to get that right and she missed by a mile.

All respect for her as an historian was lost right there.

And keeping to the story she tells and her lack of follow through... what happened to Gaellie's child?

Book Review: Very compelling series!
Summary: 5 Stars

I normally do not write reviews, but with series I had to. I cried while reading this story. I don't normally do that, but Ms. Gabaldon's storytelling is so sincere, passionate & compelling. I enjoy this series immensely and wonder to my self "Does Rosetta Stone offer a chance of learning Gaelic?" :D. Being of Scotch ancestry, This work of fiction also teaches my history. Thank you Ms. Gabaldon for researching the historical facts & weaving them into a story that represents what married couples no matter what "time" they're in face: insecurity, loss, immense joy in their children, passionate love, stubbornness, speaking ones mind, making up afterwards, silent words spoken just by looking at each other....I could go on. You have such talent Ms. Gabaldon. Well Done!!

Book Review: The Voyager
Summary: 4 Stars

I am reading the entire series of the Jamie and Claire Fraser saga. They tell a thrilling tale of love and adventure. In the first two books there was a tremendous amount of violence with graphic details of the results, but it was readable and believeable happenings of an 18th Century era of violence and war. Although the Voyager had many laugh out loud scenes I found much of the violence and gore to be unnecessary and over the top. It seemed Ms. Gabaldon was testing the limits of unpleasant, gory scenarios. I will say her writing is just as descriptive of the countryside of Scotland and the islands the couple visited in the Voyager. I found the graphic descriptions of carnage and bodily functions too much and unnecessary for the story.

Book Review: Fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read through this book as quickly as I read through the first one! This book had a lot of action in it - which was very captivating to read - and also depicts the reunion of Jamie and Claire. I loved this book; there were a lot of surprises in it (the return of a character believed to be dead, the identity of a notorious killer), there were a lot of poignant and interesting flashbacks through the eyes of Claire and Jamie (I enjoyed these immensly), and the plot and writing were simply fabulous. I simply couldn't put this book down, and read it in the span of a few days! I would definately recommend this book to all who have read the first book and who wish to read the series.
