Book Reviews of Wacky PackagesBook Review: Wacky ephemera in book form Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book put together with care. The cover is made of a similar waxy paper that we all know from unwrapping these sticker/card collections when we were kids. Series 1-7 are all pictured and each image is given a full page. The intro is by Art Spiegelman. Who knew he worked at Topps?
The book is not very large but reproduces the art at double the size, which is nice. This book is a must have for any fan of these cards as well as anyone who loves nostalgia and ephemera in general.
A great book all around.
Book Review: Simply Beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
We have been waiting for a Wacky Packages coffee table book for a long time, and when they finally did it they did it better than anybody expected. Very well constructed, stitched binding, hard cover, with four cool stickers that you can't get anywhere else. And to everybody's amazement Art Spiegelman finally talks about wackys again in a forward he wrote just for this book, breaking his 30 year silence. It has a lot more specific info and pictures about this book. Grab a first printing while you can, they are just about sold out.
Book Review: Very good, but a tad less than I'd been led to expect Summary: 4 Stars
I got my copy of the book today. Most of the images do indeed show a level of detail and a richness of color largely unseen until now. However, several of the images were clearly scanned from the mass-produced stickers and are muddy and misregistered to varying degrees (see Lavirus for very obvious example of this). I'm just happy and amazed that Topps had retained as many of the original color separations as they did. Nice li'l book, and count me in for the sequel. Until then, you'll find me at wackypackages(dot)org.
Book Review: cool beginnings for Art Spiegelman Summary: 5 Stars
I love and collected these cards as a child. They inadvertently informed my work as a toy designer and illustrator. I was not surprised when I learned the identity of the the artist was the future "Raw" publisher and pulitzer prize author and illustrator art spiegelman. I bought this and the second volume for my son on his 11th Birthday. I hope it encourages him to be irreverent and humorous with the ridiculous and over saturated world of products. The cover and layout of the book is very clever and well conceived.
Book Review: Awesome book! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book that is done so well! Wonderful pictures of the sticker categorizes by each set that was issued. I grew up in the Wacky Packages era and remembered and had many of these stickers. It was fun going through them with my kids and pointing out the ones I had and seeing if they could figure out the real add/brand that they were spoofing. Some of the adds were a challenge for even my husband and I to figure out. This is a really well done book and great to have in our library!
