Book Reviews of Warriors Box Set: Volumes 1 to 6

Book Review: I love it but it got many flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

PRO:
I love cats, and I like the drama and adventure in this series. I enjoy it alot. The pace allows no boredom. At some scenes I actually had to cry. Unfortunately, it severely lacks humor.

CON:
I will be more detailed here, but that doesn't mean I don't love the series.

1. Erin Hunter is 4 people. Who trust each-other too much. B won't double-check A's work before picking up where A has left off. This or another reason, creates errors in the time line. Events can be too long or too short ago, or even the order of events can be chronologically messed up. Same goes for cat age. Kittens described as "tiny" and "suckling" are made apprentices which only happens when the kitten is 6 months old - far from tiny. Size and age of kittens can be very very random and unrealistic.

2. Too much dwelling on the past. Every book re-explains about 3 to 5 times what had happened in the previous volume. After 10 times, it just gets annoying to be reminded of why Cinderpelt's leg is a mess. Hunter insults the readers' intelligence by doubting their memory.

3. Word repetition/phrase overuse. Eversince it was established that Tigerclaw was weird, you read the same phrase over and over, especially in book 5: "It was Tigerclaw/star!". Short !-sentences are like slogans, they get annoying and dull when overused.

4. Erin Hunter, being 4 people, don't always seem to agree on what color or hairlength a cat is. Bluestar's fur grows and shortens like grass on an English lawn.

5. Universe-related language. Cats speak in whole sentences. Why do dogs speak like Tarzan at his first encounter with civilized people? "Pack pack, kill kill"?
Also, the words that are used to describe humans and human devices are a bit annoying - the reader knows that cats don't know what cars are, no need to dumb it down and feed the reader catspeek in the narrative. It's fine for dialogues but not narrative. I personally also dislike the utter negativity a house cat's life is described with, as if keeping a cat is utter cruelty. Sometimes it reads as if the book tries to make me feel bad about keeping "kittypets".

6. Religion, does it need zealot cats who go to war because StarClan seems to want them to? Jihad anyone? Also, "deeply mythical", as described in the cover text, isn't quite the phrase. There is nothing deep about the rituals and believes of the cats in this saga, they just dwell on dreams and believe in heaven's wrath, but it's never deep or mythical. Those cats' rituals usually aren't much deeper than Sunday church.

7. Rating. Really. Kids don't need to read about fluffy kittens being taken away by hawks (which ends in the kitten being torn up alive, not described but easy to guess). The only thing I'm still waiting for, is utter gore. A cat bleeding out and spasming and gurgling blood while giving birth to what children should perceive as cute and harmless, ain't for the 9-year-old shelf either, in my humble opinion. I love the saga but it shouldn't be in the kids' shelf.

8. Lack of credibility. At one hand, the cats' life is being described very naturally, sleeping on moss, hunting, raising hackles and behaving like cats do. They don't make humanoid moves like grasping their heads like the lions do in The Lion King, they don't cry tears, they don't sing. So why do they make little lunch packages and bandages and ointments...? The contradiction in nature vs. humanization is too strong here, to the point it's annoying. Yes, they need to recover from their injuries and the medicine cat concept is cute, but there could have been a line between plucking and eating healing herbs, and actually having your own feline meth lab.

9. Dear Erin Hunter, ALL cats can swim.

10. Sad events pile up, violence too, but where's the laughter? The only really funny scene so far was Cinderpaw snapping at Tigerclaw calling him a "useless lump of hair" considering he's a badass deputy and she's a crippled apprentice. There is no humor whatsoever. Cats are extremely funny creatures but sometimes I doubt "Erin Hunter" ever even had cats.

11. Hunting realism. All hunts are successful at the first try, and the cats always finish off their prey with the first attack. Weird, the prey animals must all be inbred...
