Book Reviews of We Have a Baby

Book Review: A newborn operating manual for toddlers
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this book. It is very simple. I see it more of a newborn operator's manual for toddlers then anything else. It is very simple: we love the baby, feed the baby, wash the baby, put the baby to sleep. I think it stands be something that is empowering to a little one who wants to know what to DO. There are also pictures that show things like the mother breastfeeding and the child wants to be held like before. In the next picture they are all sitting together and the child is eating something and drinking from a sippycup while the mom continues breastfeeding. I like this for it proactive approach instead of an emotional one. My problem with a lot of books that deal with this very issue is that there tends to be emotional baggage thrown into it. So it identifies feelings that are somewhat projected or anticipated before dealing with the problem instead of just dealing with the problem. Like when your kid bangs his knee really hard and then looks to you, if you look scared and sad the kid starts crying dramatically but if you look blank the kid can assess his/her own feelings and usually will shake it off and keep playing. I have wondered lately if some of the feeling aren't brought on by the books...like the books deal with sibling rivalry where the first half of the book is just giving one ideas on how to pester and annoy the other.
I should take the time to say, a couple of the Amazon reviews I read talked about how it was an "ethnic" or "african american" but I have to say I was thrown by the babies blue eyes. I am a first generation latina immigrant I have never actually seen a newborn with blue eyes...I guess in a nice diverse family it could happen so I consider myself enlightened by the book as well.
One of the things I like about the book is the father participating in child care but more importantly is how the father is drawn....somewhat effeminately. In one picture I actually had to take a minute and say, "well, that's weird, why did the mom get a perm halfway through the book." If in a bind you could use this book for a house with two mommies.
