Book Review: Welcome To Blues Clues

ISBN 0689829523 - Manufactured in Mexico. I've always liked Blue's Clues, especially when Steve was the host, and books based on the series are favorites. The fact that children have fun and, quite unintentionally on their part, happen to learn, is the greatest secret to Blue's success.
Steve welcomes the reader to Blue's house, where he invites the reader to help him figure out where Blue would like to go today. From the living room, to the bedroom, to the kitchen and finally off to Blue's school, there are flaps to lift everywhere. Some of the flaps hide clues, while others have questions to answer - and still others hide the answers to those questions!
There are some small negatives. There are so many flaps to open and so many questions under them, that it is bound to be overwhelming to some very young readers, as well as distracting from the original "mission" - finding out where Blue wants to go today. Those readers are also the most likely to tear off the flaps, which are no more or less flimsy than most lift-the-flap books. On the flip side, the target audience of this book is 4 to 8, children who are generally a little more gentle to their books, not the toddler set.
Each two-page spread is set in one room and has a different color theme. The text, by Angela C. Santomero, is limited and fairly simple for beginning readers. Soo Kyung Kim's illustrations are bright, bold and colorful, as well as populated by familiar characters from the TV show. The pages are pretty average board book pages but, because of their size (about 9 1/4" x 10") they feel slightly flimsy. The flaps are thin cardboard and flush with the page, which usually means that, if they tear - and they almost always do - they're often too much trouble to repair.
