Book Reviews of What Every Person Should Know About War

Book Review: Now Everyone Does Know About War!
Summary: 4 Stars

What Every Person Should Know About War by Chris Hedges is an excpetional book. Hedges gives straight answers about many touchy subjects dealing with war and all the struggles that come with it. From what I have read in the past, this book covers war the greatest. I believe, as Americans, we do not truely know the struggles and depth of war that a person goes through. Although this book is not a "story", it allows you to feel as though you are in real war-like situations. By reading this book one truely recieves an understanding of war.

I read this book with my World Civilization Class as a freshman in college and It had been my favorite thing so far in the class. Not only have I enjoyed the book, but also learned a great amount of information. I think this book is a great book to read in a college class because the majority of us, as college students, have never been at war. I believe you recieve a great amount of respect for those fighting for your country when you realize all they are going through. In my class, not only are we reading the book, but we take time discussing the questions and our feelings twords them. I really enjoy this time as it helps one understand the book that much better. This book, I belive would also be extremely helpful for highscholl aged students.

As some highschoolers are going into the army, marines, or navy; they might not know just what they are getting theirselves into. This book has a couple great chapters concerning boot camp and actually serving in the front lines. It covers very personal subjects and questions one might be hesitant to ask. Although the book was not written this year, it even talks about the war we are currently fighting in over in Iraq. For not being written this year, the book is very up to date on the events taking places in wars right now.

The only concern I have with a book like this is updating it. I feel that in a few years we will have grown in technology and the book will need to be updated on current fighting tactics and other information. Although it is a great book and very informatives, in a matter of years our world will be using far more technology and the book will be outdated. Other than that, I think the book is a great informational tool.

I would definantly recommend this book to others after reading it. It is a great informational book and can be read by someone of any age or gender. It would be great in a classroom setting or as personal enjoyment. Hedges does the title justice because this book is full of subjects that "everyone needs to know about war".

Summary of What Every Person Should Know About War

Acclaimed New York Times journalist and author Chris Hedges offers a critical -- and fascinating -- lesson in the dangerous realities of our age: a stark look at the effects of war on combatants. Utterly lacking in rhetoric or dogma, this manual relies instead on bare fact, frank description, and a spare question-and-answer format. Hedges allows U.S. military documentation of the brutalizing physical and psychological consequences of combat to speak for itself.

Hedges poses dozens of questions that young soldiers might ask about combat, and then answers them by quoting from medical and psychological studies.

? What are my chances of being wounded or killed if we go to war?

? What does it feel like to get shot?

? What do artillery shells do to you?

? What is the most painful way to get wounded?

? Will I be afraid?

? What could happen to me in a nuclear attack?

? What does it feel like to kill someone?

? Can I withstand torture?

? What are the long-term consequences of combat stress?

? What will happen to my body after I die?

This profound and devastating portrayal of the horrors to which we subject our armed forces stands as a ringing indictment of the glorification of war and the concealment of its barbarity.
