Book Review: A Mini to Help You Mini-mize Mindfully

The "What I Ate" Mini Journal is exactly what it claims to be: a purse-sized hard-covered food diary that allows you to keep track of your daily intake of breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks on a day per page basis. A handy elastic can either encircle the book to keep it neatly closed while not in use, or mark the page in which you are currently transcribing your dietary selections. The format is simple: each page leaves room for you to mark the date plus the contents of three meals and snacks, leaving more than enough space for you to code in some notes on how well you slept, your general health and exercise routines for the day. Interspersed within the journal pages are full-page quotations about the art of eating and dieting and spreads that ask for information about your favorite meals, favorite places to eat and most memorable culinary adventures.

Although, most likely, this book is intended as a record of a culinary journey--perhaps a trip where one finds him/herself eating their way through the great gastronomic areas of Tuscany, Bologna, Paris, New Orleans or Chicago (for starters) and wants to remember every savory bite, I use this journal as an analysis key in an elimination diet. As I suffer from periodic headaches which I can only attribute to something I am eating, I find I can determine more readily the dietary culprit simply by making note of what I eat, what I do in terms of exercise and how I feel. So far, I have discovered that eating yogurt more than twice a week results in an overall digestive tract slow-down while indulging in a 10 ounce glass of green vegetable juice that I create from kale, celery, and other ingredients keeps me bright and energetic well into the middle of the afternoon. Eating a carb rich meal at lunchtime works better for me than eating such a meal at dinnertime, while eating about 6 ounces of protein at dinner insures that I awaken the next morning feeling refreshed and ready to go. Snacking should be limited to perhaps a small after dinner indulgence, but should by no means be enjoyed throughout the day as the body needs time to fully digest each of the three larger meals. The mere action of writing down everything that you eat instantly makes you more aware of just how much you are expecting your body to process without weight gain or digestive discomfort forcing you to become mindful rather than mindless.

Bottom line? If the "What I Ate" Journal is intended to record culinary experiences that one does not wish to forget, the format of the book may be a bit scant to write down each and every appetizer, soup, salad, main entree and cheese and dessert that one might encounter during such a memorable meal. However, if one is using this to record their daily intake of food for the purpose of analyzing their dietary faux pas with the intention of taking appropriate action through experimentation, this diary is more than sufficient to handle your needs in a precise yet attractive way that is easy to discreetly carry. I do recommend this as it suits my needs. However, I would highly recommend it if it were priced either at a lesser cost or packaged with a sleeve in the front cover that would allow personalization with a slipped-in photo.
