Book Reviews of What It Is

Book Review: Disturbing
Summary: 2 Stars

If you like a book jam packed full of artwork, you will like this book and on the surface, I did at first, but as I examined it closer, I found some of the pages very dark and disturbing with dark or red faceless heads with piercing eyes, or people with skeleton or ghost faces. This wasn't just one page but many pages. Also, you will find page after page of octopus', which I found rather boring after the first couple of pages. I counted almost 70 pages with octopus'drawings on them! I was really disappointed in this book and will think twice before buying anything else by this author.

Book Review: A Refreshing Reminder of What [Play] Is
Summary: 4 Stars

There is a wonderful simplicity at the center of the jumbled confusion that seems to characterize the aesthetics of this book. It was recommended to me by a friend who took a class with Ms. Barry: she said that "What It Is" pretty much tells you all you need to know to be a writer. I agree. While it probably won't necessarily make you a great writer, it does a wonderful job in contextualizing the creative process in a universal and highly accessibly way. Since finishing it some weeks ago, the precepts and insights of the book have only grown more pertinent. Good stuff.

Book Review: what is it
Summary: 4 Stars

Lynda Barry is idiosyncratic, funny, dreamy, hardcore etc. etc. She's also a practicing pragmatist. Anyone needing a refresher course on disassembling the obstacles to creativity could probably benefit from this book. The collages are elaborate, beautiful and tender but I think I actually like the hand drawn asides that bring the reader into the world of the artist's upbringing and self-talk, the area at which she's always excelled. It's by being herself that Barry becomes Everyman for every man and woman.

Book Review: truly inspiring!
Summary: 5 Stars

Lynda Barry is a creative wonder - her writing and illustration are so jam packed with originality and wisdom, the sheer density of it can seem almost a little overwhelming at first. But stick with this one, let the whole experience wash over you, and you'll find yourself absorbing the messages and laughing and learning and itching to create for yourself -- even coming out of a long drought.

Many thanks to Lynda for sharing what she's learned in such an honest, compelling, and inspiring way.

Book Review: If you are even a teeny bit creative. . .
Summary: 5 Stars

. .then this book might change your life. It's beautiful and interesting and appeals to the nonrational part of my mind. After looking at just a few pages, I noticed at all kinds of thoughts and feelings about my own life came bubbling up to the surface. A coupoe of hours later, I started eying up some storage space I have to see if I could turn it into a creative space. I need room to be messy and enthusiastic. My simple table and chair in a corner may now be inadequate to hold all my projects now.
