Book Reviews of What Not to Wear

Book Review: Somewhat accurate
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is good for visual learners since these authors do more showing than telling. The book is organized by body parts with full color photos of the authors modeling the Do's and Don'ts for dressing each body part...on the left page, they model what you shouldn't wear...and on the right page, they model what you should wear. And just in case you couldn't figure that out, they wear sad pouty faces and hunched shoulders when they're dressing like a Don't and happy faces and erect posture when they're dressing like a Do.

As far as their suggestions for Do's and Don'ts, I mostly agree with their Don'ts, but only partly agree with their Do's. For example, I agree that large-busted women look best in V-necks and scoop necks and look disproportionate when they wear high necks (although I once did see a large-busted woman pull this off in a black, lightweight blouse).
However, I thought some of their Do's were way off...especially the section on how to dress short-legged women.
For example, they suggest short-legged women wear long coats and long dresses. But I think long goes with long body...and short goes with short body (except for capri pants which make short legs look even shorter).
They also suggest short-legged women wear wide, flowing palazzo pants...but the last thing a petite woman needs is width. Palazzo pants will just make a petite woman look like she's drowning in fabric.

I didn't care for the fabric choices the authors made (lots of synthetic fabrics and busy patterns). And I didn't care for their style choices either. These authors are big fans of wearing a long dress over pants (not over leggings, but regular pants), which I think would make the average woman look fat. However, these are really just taste preferences.

What really bothered me, though, was the authors twice suggesting women wear see-through dresses (which gave me visions of the see-through dress Rose McGowan wore to an award show) and also the numerous tops which showed off Trinny's nipples. Hasn't this woman heard of a bra? These outfits left nothing to the imagination and I think a certain amount of modesty equals good style.

It seemed odd for these authors to use themselves as models for disproportionate bodies since they didn't have many problem areas. Sure, Trinny's boobs were small and Susannah's arms were slightly big, but other than that, I thought they had great bodies.
Trinny, for example, has a body similar to Gwyneth Paltrow's...and yet, Trinny is used as an example of someone with a big butt. Can you imagine someone looking at Gwyneth Paltrow and thinking she has a wide load?

These authors are very harsh when describing each other's body parts...brutal actually. They call their figure challenges "defects" and basically describe each other as hideous, deformed monsters who luckily have found ways to camouflage themselves from the world.
These authors pride themselves on their honesty, but unfortunately, don't include tact with that honesty.

I'm guessing they're using this brutally honest approach as a way to cheer up the reader...by putting themselves down, they raise the reader up in comparison. But I don't need someone to feel low in order to make myself feel high. So, instead of feeling in tune with these authors, I ended up feeling wary of them...wary that if I ever met them, they'd be just as brutal with me.
