Book Reviews of What the Dead KnowBook Review: a dark, engrossing tale Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of the most complex suspense novels I've ever read. The story shifts in time and point of view, each section more interesting than the last. It's a morally ambiguous tale that makes the reader both feel and think. How do we keep our children safe from harm? Can a lie told in good conscience breed danger later on, if only from the distance lies inevitably invoke? Ms. Lippman's writing ranges from the matter of fact to the beautiful; her metaphor for hope was powerful enough to bring tears. WHAT THE DEAD KNOW made me go out and buy a good many of the author's backlist...they can hardly be more compelling than this one, though.
Book Review: Glued to it! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first Laura Lippman book I've ever read. I normally don't stay with an author because I like a variety and prefer to jump around. I must say,I will definitely be reading Ms Lippman again. I am hooked. This books was so suspenseful and action packed, I could not put it down, a real page turner. The premise alone was extremely original, not like the same old missing persons hulla-buloo. Even though she jumped from present day to past events, it was so easy to follow. The writing is so emotionally descriptive (but not overkill) and shear genius! Read it! This is not your typical mystery. You wont be disappointed.
Book Review: Meandering tale of missing girls Summary: 3 Stars
This novel is almost less a mystery than it is the intimate inspection of the complete deterioration of Dave and Miriam's relationship and a smug woman who may or may not be Heather, one of their missing and presumed dead daughters.
The mystery woman who claims to be Heather was a quite unlikable character. Her parents were the much more interesting and compelling people in the story.
What the Dead Know is a decent, if dense and wandering, read. The constant shifts in time made it jarring where it didn't really need to be. I might just have to see what else this author has to offer.
Book Review: Great Story! That's What I Know Summary: 5 Stars
I also know that my review can not do this book justice. But I had to get my five stars in. Why this book doesn't have more of them I'll never know.
Laura Lippman's writing as always is excellent, the story compelling and the style she choose to tell the story was great.
Through the whole book I never felt too emotionally overwhelmed by the plot and was able to enjoy the telling of the story. But the last sentences of the book had me crying and I finally got the emotional release that such a story should have.
Bravo
Book Review: WOW! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very good book, riveting though the best part of the book is at the end it's worth the wait. Author builds the suspense level way up to find out the true story. Most stories that deal with alot of facts tend to loose the reader but this isn't the case here. No, I'm not going to tell you how it plays out but I will tell you this when I was done with the book I said that was a really great book. It makes me want to check out other stuff done by the author. This would make a great movie too!
