Book Reviews of What the Dead Know

Book Review: a decent read
Summary: 4 Stars

This was my first book by Lippman. I read this book in one sitting - I love the way she writes, and the story had me hooked. It's a very dark tale, so that was depressing in spots.

I figured out the twist really early in the book. (That may not be the book's fault, though.) The resolution was rushed, and I didn't buy aspects of it.

Several people are annoyed by the use of the phrase "a police." Didn't bother me - I assumed it was a colloquialism.

Book Review: Suffers from Its Critical Praise
Summary: 4 Stars

I picked up this novel at the suggestions of "The Strand" magazine that named it the best novel of 2008. Unfortunately, with praise such as this even good stories come off feeling overrated. This novel was well plotted up until the end where I found the resolution rather disappointing. Still the journey is worth it. The characters are all well rounded, real and interesting. Certainly worth the time and definately enjoyable, but not the best thing I've read this year.

Book Review: do yourself a favor - read the book
Summary: 5 Stars

WHAT A STORY!!! The author keeps the then and now thing going right to the end - and it works. This is my first Lippman - but it will not be my last. I kinda had guessed some of the end - but this is one of the best books I have listened to in a long long time. Well written and well read. I commute so I listen to a lot of books and this was a good one.

Book Review: My first Laura Lippman Novel but definitely not my last
Summary: 5 Stars

What a wonderful book. I listened to the audio book and it was captivating. Her prose style is wonderfully intelligent and well articulated. The plot was ingenious with totally unpredictable twists and turns. 5 star rating is low in my estimation for this wonderful work.

Book Review: So-So
Summary: 3 Stars

This was definitely not my favorite Laura Lippman book. I felt it dragged in a number of places and the ending was really rather expected, rather than a surprise.

If you want to read Lippman at her finest, check out the Tess Monaghan series.
