Book Reviews of When Darkness Comes (Guardians of Eternity, Book 1)Book Review: Always finish a book before you judge, the story was GOOD in the end. 3 1/2 stars Summary: 3 Stars
People who do not finish a book should never be allowed to write a review. It is not fair to the author. This is Alexandra Ivy's (or Debbie Raleigh's) first book in the GUARDIANS OF ETERNITY series and for a debut novel, it actually gets better and comes into its own at the end.
In reading the negative reviews, about a quarter of them admitted they had not finished the book. Since the end of the book answered a lot of the complaints and questions about the characters, the background of the paranormal world of Dante and and solved the mysteries of the book, giving this book one or two stars without completing it, is not fair.
Even when I hated the 2 Anita Blake books I read, I waded through all the disgusting perverted muck before I wrote my Amazon review.
Yes, the writing was full of cliches and wince inducing tired old romance novel language you expect from a dime store book. But by the end, there was less and less of the poor editing and bad writing.
When Dante and Viper BOTH remark that they are attracted to Abby's "Purity", the reader has every right to scatch their head, but the author has Dante explain what "Purity" meant to the two ancient vampires near the end of the book.
When Abby shouts "Yowza" after her orgasms and "Holy freaking cow" when the delectable Dante makes love to her, one wishes her language was a bit more apt for the satisfaction a grown woman feels when she is loved up just right.
Yes, Abby is kind of a nag hag and whiny in the beginning, but Abby was the victim of familial neglect, abuse and abandonment. She was "alone" in the world. She had settled for a dead end job of being a go-fer for a spoiled arrogant female named Selena. Abby settled for a job that paid her rent. Quickly, on page 16, the mansion Abby works at is decimated by a deadly explosion. After she dusts herself off, she rushes upstairs and sees her boss dying from burns. In Selena's death throes, Selena grabs Abby and Abby is given a spirit called THE PHOENIX and turned into a VESSEL or CHALICE without Abby's knowledge or consent. This unwanted transfer to Abby makes her body and soul change, makes demons and witches want her dead and she is forced to run for her life over and over again. Abby had no idea what was going on in the house between Selena and Dante and had thought that Dante was Selena's sex slave. In reality, Dante had been captured by witches and enchanted to protect Selena while Selena was the VESSEL for the PHOENIX. Dante and Selena could barely stand the sight of each other. Dante annoyed Abby by calling her "lover" repeatedly and when strange, dangerous things happen to the two of them; Abby had a lot of justifiable objections and denial to what Dante was telling and ordering her to do. Within 24 hours of Abby being turned into a target for evil beings; Abby is confronted by monsters, covered in stinking muck and grime and forced to run for her life. I'd be much more snively, whiny and bitchy than Abby was!!
Yes, I agree, the author repeated the circumstances of her vile childhood too often.
But to say Abby has no redeeming qualities is to tell me, you did not read the book.
On page 272, Dante the delicious, tells Abby why he was attracted to her from the beginning. No sweeter or more convincing confession of love or attraction could have been made to the love starved Abby than the one Dante delivers to her from pages 268 to 272.
The premise of the book was an interesting twist for the vampire genre. The hero Dante was a refreshing change. He was funny, gentle and as Abby said, "kind". Not words usually used in conjunction with vampires. He held back a lot of his powers because he thought Abby could not stand too much of the strange and otherworldly all at once. Abby turns out to be braver, stronger and smarter than she even thought she could be. The love story between them is believable and their bonding is sweet. The introduction of Viper, Dante's older vampire friend and a female demon Shallot who helps them destroy the evil forces that were after Abby was very engrossing. These two characters Viper and the Shallot promises that the second book, Embrace the Darkness will be even better than this debut novel. It's the next read for me.
