Book Reviews of When Will There Be Good News?: A NovelBook Review: Good news! Summary: 5 Stars
This has been out for a while and had lots of reviews, so I will only add my kudos to Kate Atkinson for another very good, if unusual, book. A blurb on the cover of the paperback deems it "unputdownable," which seems very apt. Atkinson is so good at weaving together the tragic and the comic and developing fascinating characters. The teen-orphan Reggie is especially well-drawn. Jackson is, as usual, a good man, but certainly flawed. Louise keeps trying to get it right. A pivotal new character is somewhat annoying for most of the book, but we find that all is not what it seems. For readers who haven't yet read the two previous books in the "series," there is just enough backstory, but not so much that it is distracting to those who have read them. I'm so glad someone recently recommended this author!
Book Review: When Will There Be Another Jackson Brodie Book? Summary: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book - I wish that I had had more time over the weekend to read it! I must admit, I was a bit disappointed in the end though... not only that the book was finished, but in the way that it didn't wrap up as tightly together as _Case Histories_ or even _One Good Turn_. Mostly, I was left lingering questions that make me VERY anxious for the next installment of Jackson Brodie's story. I guess, first of all - whose son is Nathan? Why call the dog Jackson, when Brodie is much better for a dog? Will Jackson and Louise end up together? I hope all of these questions and more are answered in the next book... I hope there IS a next book!! Though I have the feeling that it will probably be a very long wait...
Oh, it was quite nice how many dogs were in the book! A very good book!
Book Review: Sheer perfection, Sheer enjoyment!!! Summary: 5 Stars
A MUST read!! I have read all of her Jackson Brodie series (this is # 3), and this did not disappoint! I think it was even better than her 1st 2 ("Case Histories" and "One Good Turn") This is a page-turner with lovable, memorable characters!
Atkinson does it again with her ability to make you really care about her characters and TIES THEM ALL TOGETHER neatly and suspensefully. Loved seeing more of Chief Inspector Louise! Reggie, Dr. Hunter, Jackson...they all made me smile. Despite a horrific 1st chapter, dark, sad, tragic; the rest of the book was delightful!!
I also highly recommend "Behind the Scenes at the Museum", and I plan on reading "Human Croquet" and "Emotionally Weird" next!!
Can't wait for the next Jackson Brodie installment!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!
Book Review: Kate Atkinson is Good News To Me Summary: 5 Stars
Stephen King recommended I read this book. Okay, it's not like I know Stephen King. But I read his column in Entertainment Weekly and he mentioned this author so I got the book and read it and will be forever grateful to Mr. King for the tip. Such a good read. Compelling story, in-depth characterizations, beatiful effortless prose. Popular fiction isn't usually this good.
So now I have to buy the rest of her books and read them all. I also recommended this book to my mom and another friend, both of who are completely hooked on this author. So it's not just me. Read it! You won't regret it!When Will There Be Good News?: A Novel
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
I liked Case Histories well enough but wasn't as dazzled as some of the critics by that book. But Atkinson's latest take on the mystery genre is compelling, intriguing, and hard to put down. This is fine storytelling and it's all very entertaining to read. She creates several vivid characters this time around, though I have to say the whole thing would have been pretty grim if Atkinson didn't have such a wicked sense of humor. I really enjoyed the multiple stories going on, though the sections on a character named Billy were the least interesting. I would like it if Atkinson wrote something other than a mystery next time around, though I do hope to see Jackson Brodie, Louise Monroe, and Reggie in a future Atkinson book.
