Book Reviews of When the Wind Blows

Book Review: Not sure? It's worth the read
Summary: 4 Stars

After being loaned this book for summer reading, I went back and bought my own copy. The story isn't quite what I expected, but I found I couldn't but it down.

The summary for the book is simple. Veterinarian Frannie crosses paths with a young girl named Max. But Max isn't any ordinary little girl. She has wings. And she can fly. And she's on the run, and you know that Frannie is going to end up getting involved.

This novel will answer the how and why that most readers will have. While I think at times events that take place are a little far-fetched or unrealistic, the events that happen will keep you sucked in, and you'll want to know more and more as you read. There's a certain science-fiction element through such ideas as genetic-engineering.

Anything told through Frannie's point of view, is at least to my memory, told in first person. Anything through Max, Kit's, or any other character's point of view is third person limited. This point of view I think works well for the type of story being told. First person makes things awkward.

You'll find yourself wanting to read more and more about Max and where she comes from, and the people around her. I can't say much without spoiling it, but Max and her friends are my favorite characters. Yet at certain times, I felt a little overwhelmed by the underlying, you know it's going to happen, romance between Kit and Frannie. I don't know how such committed and powerful relationships develop in dire circumstances, but you can bet they always do.

There's lots of drama and action, so you certainly won't get bored reading this book. It will also have you thinking. Overall, it's definately a good read.

Summary of When the Wind Blows

Frannie O'Neill is a young and talented veterinarian living in Colorado. Plagued by the mysterious murder of her husband, David, a local doctor, Frannie throws herself into her work. It is not long before another bizarre murder occurs and Kit Harrison, a troubled and unconventional FBI agent, arrives on her doorstep. Late one night, near the woods of her animal hospital, Frannie stumbles upon a strange, astonishing phenomenon that will change the course of her life forever....

Her name is Max.
With breathtaking energy, eleven-year-old Max leads Frannie and Kit to uncover one of the most diabolical and inhuman plots of modern science. When the Wind Blows is as unique a story as has ever been told, filled with suspense and passion.

When the Wind Blows has one of those outrageous premises that you either buy into (a girl with wings?), or you don't. Fortunately, Blair Brown's narration helps you suspend disbelief. Brown, the multi-Emmy-nominated star of the classic TV series The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, reads the story with more authority than the plot seems to merit. But as urgent and forceful as she is with the central narration, she's even better when reading the first-person passages in the voice of Frannie O'Neill, the widowed veterinarian at the center of this James Patterson thriller. That's when she gives the story real heart, a desperately needed humanity in the midst of all the cloning and genetic tinkering. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Lou Schuler
