Book Reviews of "Where Did I Come From?"

Book Review: Good, but incomplete
Summary: 3 Stars

I remember this book from my own childhood. Now in my dotage, I have just read my very own copy of the book (30 years old?) to my four-year-old son, with whom I try to be straightforward about The Truth. Before reading him this book, his questions about where babies come from have mostly leaned toward male and female contributions to baby making (wants to know what those two "eggs" he has are all about) and just exactly where the baby comes out of the momma. It was my wish to answer these questions properly but in an age-appropriate manner that lead me to conclude that this book is incomplete.

I feel the book is missing a line or two about the fact that the sperm are made in the testicles. But more importantly, the book omits discussion and drawings of the ova, and the uniting of the sperm and egg. I feel this is a very important point, and the author missed a great opportunity. My son has no idea how it can be that his daddy supplied half of him and his mom supplied half. And maybe these details are too much for this age. But I really think an emphasis on the "lucky" sperm and its union with the egg, that includes visuals, would complete the information in this book.

I am inclined to say the book is male-centric, but only as a footnote to my other comments.

Book Review: TOO MUCH GRAPHIC INFORMATION!
Summary: 1 Stars

NOT A GOOD BOOK AT ALL!--I was searching for a book to help me explain SIMPLE facts for my five year old in an age appropriate manner without horrifying her with too much detail of sex. I was horrified to read the book and see that it talked about sex in TOO MUCH graphic detail, even having a description about how good sex feels.

It has a picture of a man and a woman in a bath together and has graphic images of a penis and breasts, and it refers to breasts by an inappropriate slang term and calls them "a mobile milk bar". It then goes on to talk about how a man and woman get in bed together and gets on top of...well, you get the idea. Then there is a graphic picture provided, followed by how making love feels like a pleasurable ticking that you don't want to stop. It talks about the rest of how things happen, which do not need to be repeated here, and it goes into how a baby is born by the mother having a stomach ache and pushing the baby out. It talks about how small a woman is and how big a baby is and how much hard work is involved, then it wraps up with a page about a belly button.

While well meaning, it went into WAY TOO MUCH detail. I suggest that people borrow this book from someone before deciding to purchase it. I was sorely disappointed.

Book Review: Good, but maybe too graphic...
Summary: 5 Stars

I got the movie and book as a "pack" after our 5 year old asked about sex and babies. Yes SEX and babies....horrifying thought isn't it.

I enjoyed how it explained what really happens to make a baby. How it takes a man and a woman, sperm and eggs etc. And I liked how they used "LOVE" in a lot of it. It was all about the man and the woman loving each other. :)

What I could have done with out was the detail about sex.

To me they just went a little to far...I would have left it at the man and woman are naked and very close to each other...end of story.

The book however goes into detail about the man putting his penis into the woman's vagina and wiggling around. Then explains how it has the same feeling as being tickled. Its one thing to know that "sex" is the reason babies are made, but not a manual for how it's done. Luckily in the book you can skip over it (until they learn to read anyway.)

I think this is a good way to introduce a child to sex and babies, but even better when they are younger and you can add your own morals to the story. (Marriage (which is not mentioned), God for people who are religious etc).

Book Review: Curiosity got my....kids!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Ok, Kid's Perspective:

This is my mom's sign on name, but I have an opinion about this book.
I'm sixteen right now, and I'm astounded that the book is STILL selling well! My dad had read the book, for pete's sake! I remember when this was presented to me about 10 years ago, and it had REALLY graphic stuff, too graphic for young kids to read, and I wasn't sure what to think of it all. The one thing that has stuck in my head over 10 years is the side by side comparison of a naked man and a naked woman. Not only did I find this a bit confusing, the idea of sex never really dug deep into my skull till I was much older. The pictures themselve have stuck with me (to my horror) and unfortuanetly, I have to admit, that I wanted to see these pictures again...I was extremely baffled and very curious. The entire book, itself, is not meant for young kids because it gives the wrong connotation about sex, making kids more curious than needed. This is meant rather for perveted teenagers *OR MUCH OLDER AUDIENCES* to giggle over. My parents' read this to my sister and I with the best of interests, and I'm very thankful my mom could explain more about this subject better than the book.

Book Review: "Where Did I Come From?"
Summary: 5 Stars

When it comes to telling young children about where they came from, I think this is the best book for it. I liked this book because it answers the question, "where do babies come from?," in a truthful manner. It does not leave anything out when it comes to explaing sex. I liked how it gives kids the idea that children are made from parents making love. It makes it sound beautiful rather than dirty. I also liked how the book explains the biology of how babies grow in the mother, and come out of the mother. When it comes sex, it is important for a child to understand how it works. This book explains sex in a simple way, which makes it easy for a young child to understand. There are good illustrations of how sex happens, as well as pictures of how the baby grows in the mother's womb. Giving illustrations along with the text gives children a better understanding of the whole concept. The illustrations are cartoon like, which gives the entire subject a cute appeal. One day when I have kids, and I have to explain how they are made, I will use this book. I don't want to give them any false information, and this book is very truthful about the subject.
