Book Reviews of "Where Did I Come From?"Book Review: A Classic Summary: 5 Stars
I first read "Where Did I Come From" as a 10 year old. I remember sitting at the table with my mom, as page by page, we went through the illustrations and text. I have never forgotten the experience. "Where Did I Come From" combines a "no-frills, tell it like it is" approach to reproduction, and combines it with some of the best analogies (an orgasm is described as being satisfying in the manner of a great big sneeze, for instance), and some of the most wonderful illustrations I have ever seen. The book illustrates nudity, but the "Mom and Dad" are pleasantly plump, and completely unthreatening, even to a small child. I have since read the book to my now 13 year old son, and will undoubtably read it to my 3 year old when the time comes. I can't give this book high enough praise. It has EARNED a permanent spot on my bookshelf.
Book Review: A great ice breaker!! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I didn't realize our daughter had been given such a headful of misinformation from her school friends, especially at the ripe old age of 9!! First thing that I thought of was A BOOK! My daughter and I read "Where Did I Come From" like any other book at bedtime. I noticed she got a little red-faced when she got the jist of what we were reading about, and, yes, I was a bit uncomfortable, but we pressed on together. This book combines information (correct information) with a wonderful sense of humor. We read the book and later had a very open and honest conversation about not only the mechanics of sex but the underlying emotions and subsequent consequences. I'll treasure that special conversation that I had with my daughter, and I'm sure, many more to come. I applaud Peter Mayle, et al for such a wonderful way to break the ice.
Book Review: The tradition marches on... Summary: 5 Stars
My father read this book to us when we were little (very little) and I'm thrilled that it's still in print for my kids.
Sure some people find it shocking, but THAT'S WHY THEY NEED THIS BOOK. If you're too embarrassed to get through the subject with the help of this book then you'll never get through it alone. And if your kids don't learn from you they'll learn from little Johnny down the street. Do your family a favor: Use this book to start the learning and to raise the questions. Then handle the questions like an adult.
A few reviewers made the point that explaining sex as pleasureable opens the door to child molestation. Well... that's why you need to take the oppurtunity to explain that too. If you are taking an active role in your child's education this book is a great tool. Do it before MTV and little Johnny do it for you.
Book Review: Ridiculous! Summary: 1 Stars
Seriously? In my opinion, it's plain and simply just stupid. It's trying so hard to make the whole subject light hearted that it's just a big silly uncomfortable joke. The cartoon characters are all fat, the sperm have hats on, it tries to even describe what sex feels like. Like a sneeze?!? I would rather have my kids understand the process in a respectful way and let them figure out what it feels like after they are married- it won't be difficult. I will never ever ever share this book with my kids. I couldn't even read it with a straight face- my husband and I just looked at each other and said, "what?!?! um, no." I am not trying to make "the talk" fun and full of laughs with weird cartoon anatomy tacked on,... I want to find a book that treats it with a little more respect- the way it's supposed to be.
Book Review: Great book for kids who are asking question Summary: 5 Stars
My mom first read this book to me when i was 6 years old, and i am thrilled to see that it still being printed. my book was in spanish, since we lived in Colombia, and i've actually talked about it with friends from this country, which is how i found out the name of it in english.
This book, and the active role that my mom took in my sexual education opened up the channel for me to feel confortable asking any questions i had about sexuality, and any subject matter.
I think is a great book that lets kids understand in simple terms about sexuality.
I definitelly will use this book when I have children, as i am buying for a friend who wasn't sure how to explain the subject on her own to her 6 year old.
hurray to the ilustrations!!! hurray to much needed sexual education!!!
