Book Review: A Story of Man's Best Friend
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the story of Billy, a young boy growing up in the rugged Ozarks. There was only one thing in life that Billy wanted. A dog. But mind you, not just any dog. No, Billy wanted a hound dog to hunt coons. But a good dog cost money, and Billy's parents just couldn't afford it.

One day, he found a magazine with an advertisement for redbone hound dogs, and he knew he had to have them. Two puppies were going to cost $50, which was a ton of money to him. So Billy started saving. He worked hard to pick berries to sell to his grandfather's story. He caught crawfish and minnows to sell to the fisherman in the area. Two years of saving his dimes and nickels and Billy had enough money to buy the puppies. He had his grandfather send the money, and waited anxiously till they were delivered.

When they did arrive at the train station a good 20 miles from his house, Billy couldn't wait till he had a ride to pick them up. He started walking. He just had to have his dogs!! He wasn't going to let 20 miles stop him from getting something he had worked so hard for over 2 years to buy. And when he finally laid eyes on his puppies, he just knew they were the most special dogs anyone had ever had. Little Ann and Old Dan became Billy's best friends and constant companions. When they got a little older, he taught them how to hunt coons. And they were good. A legend in the making.

This story was a wonderful tale of a boy and his dogs. Those 2 dogs made an incredible impact on not only Billy, but his entire family. It's a story of unconditional love, devotion and loyalty. It made me smile and it also made me cry. I loved how hard Billy worked to get his puppies. And I think it's the perfect book for kids, especially boys. They will appreciate all the coon hunting the book contains a little more than most girls. If you've ever had a pet, especially a dog, you will appreciate the love Billy had for his "friends". This book is especially heartwarming, and the perfect book for my first read of the year!!

Book Review: Where the Red Fern Grows
Summary: 5 Stars

Billy Colman, one of the main characters of the story, lives in the middle of the Ozark Mountains with his three younger sisters and his mom and dad. Like most young boys,Billy has passion for dogs. He wants some of his own, but it would be hard for his parents to buy them at this point.
Billy finds an advertisement in an abandoned sports magazine.
They are fifty dollars all together.
He worked for two years just for two red bone hounds. Finally, the day had come. He'd collected fifty dollars.
His grandpa ordered the two hounds for him. Billy got the hounds and was heading for home. He and his dogs (Old Dan and LIttle Ann, boy and girl) had to camp out in a cave.
When Billy fell asleep he was awoken by a mountain lion roar. His dogs had awoken also. They barked and Billy threw sticks. The mountain lion went away!
Several years later, when Old Dan and LIttle Ann were coon (raccoon) catching phenoms, Billy's grandpa signed him up for a championship coon hunt.
Billy and his dogs barely make it to the final round. If they win, they will bring home a gold cup and a large jackpot.
An enormous blizzard struck while they were hunting. Billy's grandpa and his dad suffer a very bad injury from falling in the snow. Can Billy and his team pull through?
When Billy and his dogs went hunting the next time, sadness awaited them. Will a dog die? Will both dogs die? Will Billy die?
Billy Colman was about 10 years old when he got his beloved dogs. His passion of catching coons and coon hounds kept him working for two years to get his dogs. What a hard worker!
Little Ann is the girl pup in the story. She is smart and not very aggressive. Little Ann only gets in fights to save Old Dan. Old Dan and she are extremely close.
Old Dan is the boy pup in the story. He's really agressive. He's a good pup for Billy.
I recommend this book to dog lovers and people who like hunting.

Book Review: Red Fern Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

Where the Red Fern Grows Review

Where the Red Fern Grows movie was very exciting, sad and interesting. I thought it was exciting because things would come up when you least expected them. For example, when Grandpa asked Billy to enter the contest for coon hunting. It was also very sad and heartbreaking such as when Old Dan gets mortally hurt from the mountain lion. Its interesting, too, like Billy only wants Redbone coon hunting dogs and he has to have not one but two. I liked like the movie better than the book because the book moves to slow, in my opinion. For example, the movie didn't explain the beauty contest as much as the book did. I liked Where the Red Fern Grows book and movie.
I also thought there were bad things too along with all the fabulous things. One of the bad things was filming during the day when the script said the scene was at night. Also I thought they showed a weak bond between the dogs and Billy, unlike the book where it talked a lot about the bond. I also noticed that they didn't have Sammy the cat in the movie, but Sammy was in the book. Now for some fantastic things about the story, like the way Billy helps people to earn money to buy the dogs after reading an article about the people selling pups in the city. I also liked the way Billy went to his grandpa to buy the pups for him not his parents because they wouldn't like him to buy the pups. I thought it was interesting how after Billy teaches the dogs to hunt, Billy's grandpa starts bragging about how good at coon hunting Billy and his dogs are. Later on in the movie I liked how the grandpa asks Billy to be in the coon-hunting contest and then Billy ends up winning even though his grandpa got hurt. I thought it was very heartbreaking when Little Ann dies of devastation after Old Dan is killed by a mountain lion. I thought it was very nice that the Red Fern plant grows where the dogs were buried. Where the Red Fern Grows is a very exciting, interesting and sad movie and book.

Book Review: Recommended for the slightly bored
Summary: 3 Stars

Where the Red Fern Grows, written by Wilson Rawls, deserves three stars. Nothing more, and nothing less. This book is about a young boy who grows up in a poor family, and works to buy two "coon" dogs. After buying them, he enters a competition in which he wins and earns a lot of money. This therefore changes his and his family's life, for the better. One of the major reasons this book deserves a three rather than a four or five, is because the ending is so tragic.
Where the Red Fern Grows was good, so don't get me wrong. But there was nothing really exceptional about the storyline, the plot, or the beginning. All in all, if this book had been graded, it would receive a "B". It deserves three stars instead of only one or two, because this story is seemingly so innocent, until it reaches the end. At the end, the story really does take a startling turn, involving sadness beyond one's explanation through words. This part of the story WAS exceptional.
The story IS inspiring to some degree. It portrays a boy who works hard and is rewarded for it. It also reminds us that we should all have dreams of our own, and as stated before, if we work hard enough then they are possible to achieve. Lastly, this book also reminds me of my love and desire to have that type of special bond with dogs, as described on page 16. Therefore, I do recommend this book to read. Not only for school when you're required to, but if you read it during your leisurely time, I am sure that you will not suspect a waste of time. But, if you have something you know would be more interesting to read, I would recommend that also.
Other great books, from my opinion, to read would be: Eragon series, Redwall series, The Neverending Story, Abarat, the Merlin series, The Ropemaker, The Stravaganza trilogy, and all books by Tamora Pierce. I partly am in love with the Stravaganza's second book because I am in love horses, and this book is based quite strictly on them.

Book review for where the red fern grows

This book tells the amazing story of how a boy saves up all of his money to buy his two beloved dogs. He takes his dogs with him every where on many coon hunting adventures. Billy (main character) and his two dogs also want to run is a coon hunting contest. But he can't just go and enter he has to take time and practice with them. Then soon enough he and his dog will be ready to take on any coon.

The characters in this book have great personalities, so while you're reading you can feel like you know them. Well first there's Billy who the boy who bought the dogs. He a very adventurous boy who almost never stops trying. Then we have Ol'dan one of the pups that Billy bought. Ol'dan is a very strong pup who also never gives up on anything. Finally last we have li'l Anne, is a very strong, smart and fast thinking pup. She and the rest of the characters are very loyal to each other.

This is a very sad story that takes place in the forest mostly, but sometimes things happen in a little town near the Ozark Mountains. That's where Billy had bought the pups. Also in that small town Billy's grandfather owns a little fur trade shop. So Billy and his family go there to buy fur and other little things you can find in the town.

This book is the kind of book that lets you feel like your there because the author puts in so much detail. Also this book let you cry because things happen that you and anyone else would need to cry about. So if you would like to see what happens in this book that would make you cry, read it.

After you are done reading this book you will feel like all of the things happening in this book were happening to you. It is a very wonderful book about a boy named Billy and the incredible adventures he has with his pups. So please take the time to read this amazing book.
