Book Reviews of Where the Wild Things Are

Book Review: Long time childhood favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

Where the Wild Things Are is one of my favorite childhood books not to mention a Caldecott Medal winner. I can remember my first grade teacher reading this book to me and I like this book still to this day. Seeing the movie left me disappointed because I like the book much better. The story is about a boy named Max who has a wild imagination and one night he is sent to his room for being disruptive. In his room is where he imagines this place of wild things and he becomes ruler and king of the wild things. While in his imaginary places he gets a little homesick and returns home where his mother who loves him awaits him. All children have different ways of dealing with frustrations and I think this is a great book for kids to relate to. A child's way of thinking is different than an adults and I think this book can show children how to use their imagination and realize that we all have times when we are frustrated but we will always have those who care about us no matter how frustrated people can be at times. I love the moral of the story and the pictures are imaginative and creative and I think it is an overall great book and would read it to kids in the future.

Book Review: A TIMELESS CLASSIC! MY CHILDHOOD WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was born in 1962 the year before this book was first published. The book was read to me many times by my dear Mother who passed away March 1st 2009.

The book is wonderfully illustrated and has very few words, but I think that is what is so special about this imaginative story. It leaves so much room for your imagination and it never grows old. I can remember my Mother using different voices for each character in the book when she would read it to me and when I got a bit older I read the book over and over again.

Nothing will fill the emptiness in my heart, soul and body caused by my Mother's passing, but looking back on these cherished memories makes it easier and bearable. I was lucky to share many years with her and I never took her for granted.

I love and miss you Mom!

I wasn't aware that this book was even in print until reading an Amazon friend's review for it. Thanks Andrew!

This book is something every parent should share with their child or children. It will help them explore their imagination and they will know they are loved! What more could you want from a children's book?

Book Review: I Just Don't Get It
Summary: 3 Stars

Max is misbehaving. After being sent to his room without dinner, he finds his room growing into a forest. He sails away on sea and finds the Wild Things. Will he be happy in his new home?

I never read this book more than once or twice as a kid. Maybe that's why I have never gotten it. Oh, I will be the first to praise the art work. The color illustrations are quite beautiful and detailed. I really enjoyed them.

It's the story that doesn't work for me. It is left open ended, so you can draw your own lessons from it. I can certainly see those who don't like the book because of Max's bad behavior. Then again, I can see the argument that he realizes being bad all the time isn't fun. I'm not saying that you need to be beat over the head with a moral, but some sense of what the author intended would be nice.

Furthermore, there is the awkward way it is written. Some pages contain only a phrase or two. Sentences are dragged out over pages, making it very hard to follow the flow, even as an adult.

I'm not saying this is a horrid book. But it certainly isn't the classic others make it out to be.

Book Review: Artist Review
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the only books I remember from my childhood. Instead of your typical cutesy little kid story, you have something with real imagination and fun. It's an original story line with very unique illustrations. I know many adult artists who still love this book for its artwork.

I used to spend hours studying these illustrations as a child and now I'm a successful artist and I still love them. The point of these illustrations, or rather, any illustration is to supplement imagination, not create it. When I was a child these gorgeous artistic illustrations were far more interesting to me than the typical disney style. Even as a kid I could appreciate this book for its originality. Then again, I had imagination of my own, and was able to bring these creatures to life. Kids today have video games to do that for them.

I think people who rate this book as poor just can't see the value in it as art. This is a complete artistic vision executed as both literature and visual art. I can't see how anyone couldn't like this book unless they have absolutely no imagination, or if they have no appreciation for art whatsoever.

Book Review: Wild things...
Summary: 5 Stars

Our nine-month-old has been read to ever since he was three months. We have just "re-discovered" Where The Wild Things Are, and enjoy it immensely.

It reminds me of my own childhood, similar to countless other previous reviewers. For myself, however, it wasn't a book we actually had around the house. Doubtlessly I remember it from a public library reading or elsewhere.

The pictures are so intricate and the colours are vibrant, but yet subdued. When we reach the three pages of the "rumpus" (in which there are no words, only pictures), I like to leave it that way, and not comment on the scenery to the child, but just turn the pages very slowly in silence, watching him gaze at the pictures.

This book enjoys ongoing popularity. Recently it's been reviewed on Amazon every couple of days! Little wonder, as it is a joy and an inspiration to young and old (and in between) alike.

Another favourite of ours you may like to try is The Monster at the End of this Book Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover (ISBN: 0-307-16025-4). It is (backcover) "...the bestselling Sesame Street book of all time..."
