Book Reviews of Whitethorn Woods (Vintage)Book Review: Not her best... Summary: 3 Stars
I love Maeve Binchy's books, but this one did not compare to the likes of Tara Road. I usually cannot put down her books, reading them faster than I want, and then always ending up disappointed that they are over. It is because you get so involved with the characters and their lives, that you feel like they are old friends. This book I gave 3 stars to because I love Binchy's writings, but not because the story held my attention. I agree with some others, I almost had to force myself to read it, was never that interested, and when it was over I said to myself "That's it?". A bit of a disappointment, but I still think she is a great author.
Book Review: Fascinating! Summary: 5 Stars
There were a lot of characters to keep track of, however each was presented in his/her own vignette, so it read like a collection of short stories, with the cool twist that each story/character was intertwined with the others. Maeve Binchy has a special talent for weaving a tale this way. There were characters I couldn't help but love, others that I sympathized with, and others that I loved to hate. There were a few stories (like the stolen baby one) that I would have liked to end differently, but all-in-all, this book provided highly interesting and enjoyable reading!!!
Book Review: Reflections of faith. Summary: 4 Stars
The author of Whitethorn Woods cleverly weaves a series of personal stories of different characters into one central little town with a well. This well is supposedly the home of a Saint to whom all bring their problems or wishes. Progress unfortunately means a new highway will be built around the town like a bypass and right through the well. The most unsuspecting character in the book arranges for the road to bypass the well and the town will be back to a normal sleepy town without all the traffic but with its sacred well....
Book Review: hard to get through... Summary: 2 Stars
I love Maeve Binchy's writing. Her novels are often about a small group of people who's lives intertwine. But this was beyond a small group. This book seemed to encompass an entire town of people, each telling a story "first hand." The story line was a real yawn (I hate writing those words about one of my favorite novelist :( but I cannot lie...) and I never got to the point where I couldn't wait to pick it back up. She is a GREAT writer, but this book belongs in a short story collection. Did not like; and struggled to finish.
Book Review: Heartwarming, Enjoyable Read Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know how she does it, but Maeve Binchy always impresses me with her tales from far away lands. She always has interesting, intertwining storylines with characters we either love or love to hate. This story also gave the most unlikely guy the best revenge in the end. This is a real page turner that kept me up late many nights...I couldn't help to read quickly because I wanted to see what would happen next and yet sad when it was done.
I highly recommend this book and Nights of Rain and Stars!
