Book Reviews of Who Needs Donuts?Book Review: ....when you've got love Summary: 5 Stars
In 1973 Stamaty (best know today for his satirical "Washintoons" and "Boox" comic strips) wrote,"Who Needs Donuts?", now re-released by popular demand. A virtual cornucopia of images, the story follows the adventures of Sam, a boy obsessed with a need to have, "more donuts than his mother and father could ever buy him". Driven by his donut lust, Sam hops on a tricycle and leaves the suburbs for the big city. Finding a fellow donut enthusiast in the form of Mr. Bikferd, Sam and his new friend begin a city wide donut search. Some parents will wish avoid a tale of strangers promising sweets (a picture of Mr. Bikferd and Sam standing in the doorway of a darkened warehouse will certainly raise concerns). Yet few books can claim to be half as visually stimulating as Stamaty's vision, one that has not dimmed or become dated since its original 70's conception.
Book Review: Seriously...a FUN read for your kid (and you!) Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVED to read as a child, but never had this book. Then one day I stumbled on it at the library and without even really getting a chance to look at it, grabbed it (along with a few others I can't remember) and checked it out. Once we got it home, I glanced at it quickly and thought, "This one looks a little weird." And off to the side it went. Then after a few days I said to my 2.5 year old "Let's read this one." just because it is wacky and weird looking. Within that day it became a family favorite and our kid was running around asking anyone who would listen "Who needs donuts when you've got LOVE!" Totally fabulous and fun story and now I want to buy our OWN copy from Amazon. Enjoy this one!
Book Review: While We're Filming Beloved Childrens Books Summary: 5 Stars
I was overjoyed when Who Needs Donuts was reissued. I would scan Amazon.com regularly, only to find used copies for hundreds of dollars. I owned a copy back-in-the-day and believe it to have been adopted by an old girlfriend. I'm going on my 3rd copy now and see no reason to stop recommending it while available.
Certain British reviewers have deemed it too low-brow for English Sensibilities. I however dream of the day Nick Park of Aardman Animations does even a short film based on this book. Could be better than "Where the Wild-Things Are".
Sorry Spike - I promise to rent the DVD...

Book Review: Everbody Needs Who Needs Donuts Summary: 5 Stars
As children, this book kept me and my brother occupied for hours -- day after day, trying to make sense of the bizare, witty, and highly detailed drawings. We both adored the extremely funny tone that never talked down to us, the offbeat storytelling, and the unusual characters that rarely make it into children's books! This book will likely become an instant favorite with your family -- I'm currently buying copies to give to some of my closest adult friends! Regardless of age, anyone with a sense of humor and love of the unusual will be most grateful for this wonderful book!
