Book Reviews of Whole Grains Every Day, Every WayBook Review: LOVE this cookbook! Summary: 5 Stars
Although I'm not a certified chef, I have been cooking from "scratch" and cooking gourmet for many years and have recently began adding organic foods and raw recipes to my collection. Understanding that many nutrients Americans are lacking can be found in whole grains that, for some reason, aren't part of the American diet (but are fed to American farm animals--go figure!), I decided I needed a book that was serious about whole grain cooking/baking. This book contains everything you'd want and need to know about each grain (and there are many and, if you are a typical American, you will not have heard of most), how to select them and store them, and certainly how to use them. It is wonderful and I don't know of any other book as thorough on this subject as this one. If you are serious about adding real whole grains to your life, this is definitely the book you'll need before venturing off to the natural food store to get those grains and then using them. Lorna Sass has done us all an immense favor by taking the time to create this masterpiece!
Book Review: Healthful Eating Summary: 5 Stars
If you are looking for ways to make more healthful food choices for your family, as I am, this book is a wonderful resource. And, to enjoy the benefits of the many recipes, you needn't own a pressure cooker (although pressure cooking guidelines are included for those who prefer to cook their grains this way).
I have broadened my knowledge of whole grains, vastly, since purchasing this book. On my most recent trip to Whole Foods, I added quinoa, Kalijira rice, yellow corn grits and buckwheat groats to our pantry. Luckily, Whole Foods carries a lot of the rices and wheats that are discussed in the book, and I intend to try a bunch of them. The book has some beautiful full page photos that have inspired me to add to add the following to this week's menu: Shrimp, Corn, and Quinoa Soup; Wild and Brown Rice with Sesame-Soy Glazed Salmon and Masa Harina-Beef Casserole (which I think my kids will really like).
This is my fourth Lorna Sass book, and I must say that I love them all!
Book Review: Great Reference Book Summary: 5 Stars
Every book by Lorna Sass I have purchased has changed the way I run my home kitchen and this is no exception. This excellent book not only tells you all about grains, and how to cook them (and as with the other Lorna Sass books I have the recipes always work) but it also tells you how to create serving size packages of grains, freeze them and reheat them. As Ms. Sass recommends, since I purchased the book over a year ago, I keep a supply of cooked grains in my freezer, which can be reheated easily and quickly as needed. What an amazing boon that is to me. Her recipes are always good but what I really treasure her for is her instruction on technique. I also learned to use a pressure cooker from reading her pressure cooker books which I purchased at the same time as my very first pressure cooker. Because of her careful instruction, I have completely enjoyed by pressure cooker, using it mostly to avoid heating up the house in the summer - and of course for quick cooking whole grains!
Book Review: Great resource for delicious whole grain cooking and baking Summary: 5 Stars
Lorna Sass' passion for wholesome, delicious foods shines through in her latest cookbook, Whole Grains, Every Day, Every Way. This is an excellent, thoroughly researched book, with reference sections, helpful tables, and many variations provided, both for preparation methods and recipes. As a Lorna Sass fan, I was excited to read about this new book. After trying a number of the recipes, I found them to be easy to follow, with interesting taste combinations. These creative recipes have broadened our family's culinary horizons, and made incorporating whole grains into our meals easier than before. As a parent who looks for new ways to cook healthfully, I'm trying to find appealing ways to integrate more whole grains into my kids' lives as well. Whole Grains, Every Day, Every Way will be a resource I'll turn to again and again as I explore new hearty and healthy meal options, from breakfasts to desserts! Highly recommended.
Book Review: Wonderful clarity, delicious results! Summary: 5 Stars
Lorna Sass has always been in the forefront of food that is both tasty and life-enhancing, and you can watch the latecomers trying to catch up, huffing and puffing, pretending that her innovations were their ideas all the time. It happened with her pressure cooker books, with her groundbreaking vegetarian and vegan books, and this whole grains book is a masterpiece. it's clear that these recipes are the work of someone who has thought hard and tested them out. Sass thoughtfully provides invaluable advice for both the novice cook and the veteran of the open range, both about these grains, some which were new to me, and the recipes themselves. And the recipes are easy to improvise on by substituting a variety of ingredients. It's a book that is easy to love, and will become one that cooks turn to regularly. I can't write any more -- I'm possessed by a vision of kamut, sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, and broccoli rabe . . . .
