Book Reviews of Whole Grains Every Day, Every WayBook Review: at last!! Summary: 5 Stars
my hopes have been raised and then frustrated by 'natural' as well as 'complete' cookbooks that often don't give me the information i really want: what ARE and what do i DO with those mysterious grains and grits and flours at the health food store? (...like sorghum!) At last a book that clearly lays out basic information and nomenclature, explains all the nuances, and provides tempting interesting recipes besides. This is a must-have primer.
Book Review: Wide-ranging, useful, and a pleasure to read. Summary: 5 Stars
A great guide for anyone who's ever stared longingly at all the gorgeous grains in the Whole Foods bulk section, and wondered what the heck to do with them. I wanted to incorporate more whole grains into my diet, but had no idea where to start. The discussions of each grain, recipe sections, and beautiful color photos here made it easy. Now I am buying amaranth, quinoa, and hulled barley and I know how to cook them!
Book Review: Answers mysterious questions, such as 'what is spelt, anyway?' Summary: 5 Stars
My bewilderment in the aisles of Wild Oats and Whole Foods is over, thanks to Sass.
I've got most of Sass's books primarily because the background information she compiles is so good. While I'm still not over the Fear of Pressure Cookers after the Terrible Stuffed Cabbage Incident in our house forty years ago when my mother made a dreadful mistake, this new book of grains is terrific.
Book Review: The Whole Scoop on Whole Grains Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good book for someone who wants to expand his/her range of recipes for whole grains. Lorna Sass makes them sound delicious -- which, I find, is half the battle in getting people to try a new food and her recipes are not fussy. For a cook who is adventurous this cookbook may be too basic, but the descriptions of each of the grains and basic recipes will make the book a useful reference.
Book Review: Whole grains never tasted so good Summary: 5 Stars
I have not tried lots of these recipes though I hope to soon. I will say that the ones I have made - Whole Wheat Biscotti, Spelt Ginger Snaps and the Thai Chicken Rice soup are in my "best recipes ever" file. I am sure the rest are just as good. I plan to give it as presents for Christmas. So glad I discovered it thanks to other comments I read about it!
