Book Review: (4.5 stars) the obligatory serial killer mystery is the best of the series so far

Every good mystery series needs to have a serial killer episode at some point. The idea of a human so warped that they would kill not only f or self preservation or protection of others or for revenge-but for fun and in a ritualistic manner, so disturbs the average human psyche that we are inevitably fascinated by it. Serial killers make up an incredibly small amount of the number of murders committed in the world yet you can spend your entire academic life studying them, can make then your career, your bread and butter.
"Why Mermaid's sing" Is the serial killer book in the Sebastian St Cry series (0r perhaps the first of more than serial killer episode.) Someone in London is going after the sons of wealthy men, who only seem to have in common that they all once visited India. And the deaths of these young men were hardly average murderers-each was drained of blood, mutilated in a different way, had objects stuffed in their mouths and was placed in a very public place.
Though he still has no interest in investigating murder as a full time occupation, Sebastian's interest is caught by what is being called the butcher of the west end. As he digs deeper into the backgrounds of the families of the murdered boys he finds two things- a poem that seems to suggest the objects left in the dead boy's mouths were not random- and a ship where a tragedy and horror beyond human reckoning took place.
At the same time Kat Boleyn, Sebastian's lover is being blackmailed for the name of the French mastery in London and in a desperate effort to keep her safe Sebastian learns much more than he every wanted to know about her mysterious origins-an d what it means for their relationship.
This is by far the best of this series so far. I had a pretty hard time putting this one down-it moves at a breakneck speed, with a great mystery and excellent side elements which keeps you on pins and needles as to what will be revealed in the next book. And of course, the obligatory beautiful cover this series typifies. Though I confess, the major secret in this series seemed obvious to me from book one. Now I just have to wait to see how it will be revealed.
