Book Review: Nifty workbook with training CD, good for beginners

The positive points: Found CD very complementary to the text. It gives the reader 3 different learning formats or you can not use the CD and work directly from the book.

I'm not sure how new the CD training format is, (On Demand software here) but in general the idea is great. Expect it to be the wave of the future for quality training materials.

Some of the down points: Found confusion in chapter 15 on creating web documents. Did not find same insert menu which is shown on p. 246. I'm not sure what the problem was, but ended up skipping this chapter.

Found p. 272 on inserting an Excel chart a little surprising. It just seems like there should be an easier way to create the desired chart from existing data instead of retyping everything. This may just be Word97, but a comment on this would be nice.

On using the CD: I'm not sure if it was just my system (which is '98) or monitor set-up, but selecting some of the text in the CD "teacher mode" for example, was difficult in some cases. And positioning cursor in small boxes was also difficult. There seems to be a misregistration between cursor position and actual location in the tutorial. This can be bypassed by just moving forward one frame, on the selection bar, but it was a little annoying.

Some recommended additions to the text are:

1. A section on using symbols. 2. A section on opening multiple Word documents and working between them to, for example copy a paragraph. 3. Improvements in the slightly annoying CD ROM cursor dynamics (in about 10% of locations) if the problems are really with the CD software.
