Book Reviews of WordPress 2

Book Review: A "pimp my blog" book for beginners
Summary: 4 Stars

Wordpress is a really awesome piece of software for managing simple websites, most notably blogs. I have been using it for several months for my clients' websites, and have been impressed by the quality of the code, the relative ease of the user interface, and the great community of designers and programmers who contribute to the knowledgebase of this free software.

If you are fairly new to the world of web publishing, this book will probably seem pretty darn sophisticated, and that's great. If you follow the instructions here, your wordpress website will probably be cooler than that of your friends, and what more can you ask for but to Pimp My Blog?

For the more experienced web developer, this book is a good guide if you've just started using Wordpress and your expectations are modest. The book doesn't even begin to cover sophisticated ins and outs, or offer any dissection of what makes wordpress such great software. So, if you already have an excellent grasp of CSS, a modest grasp of PHP, and some history of web design, this book is a great way to dive right in, but not a way to build your technical skills or deepen your understanding of Wordpress.

Enjoy using Wordpress! Since the software is completely free despite being worth hundreds of dollars per installation, the $25 that this book costs is well worth it.

Book Review: An adequate start but omits the important points
Summary: 3 Stars

This book provides an adequate overview of Wordpress, with plenty of screenshots to illustrate steps to take. It's a book though for people already equipped with familiarity with the basics of blogging and web coding, not for beginners with no exposure to HTML or PHP. Lacks clear explanations of terms that Wordpress users should be familiar with and omits step-by-step instructions of the two most important tasks anyone who uses Wordpress to publish and maintain a blog should be prepared to complete: 1) backing up your Wordpress files and database, and 2) install the latest version of Wordpress. Help with performing those two tasks was why I purchased this book. I was so disappointed that it contained no instructions to help me with these essential tasks. This book works as a supplementary text.

Book Review: A Quickstart to nowhere
Summary: 1 Stars

Sorry folks, but skip this one (and many of VQGs, fyi).

My Beef:
1. leaves out explanations of "why" Wordpress works the way it does. (example: why doesn't Safari display the editor toolbar?)
2. When things get complicated, instead of explaining how Wordress works, the authors suggest that you "leave it alone." (Wow, thanks for the help!)
3. Too many simple things are detailed, for example directions on how to log onto a blog. (We can trim the fat in places like this, and add more details to say, tweaking a theme).

My suggestion: read the online documentation and participate in online discussions until a better read comes out. This one wasted $24 that I could of spent on beer.

Book Review: Keep Looking
Summary: 1 Stars

I agree with many of the other reviews that I have seen here. I usually don't right a review and I usually give most tech books the benefit of the doubt. I gave up on this book in Chapter 6. The first 5 chapters are nothing more than going through every page of Worpress admin and reading the input field. With no real explanation of what items do. I have been looking for a worpress book for a while and this was the first one I came across I was very disappointed. With that being said I will keep looking for a good wordpress book but in the mean time I will probably be better off just getting a good MySQL + PHP book.

Book Review: A good general Wordpress overview
Summary: 3 Stars

Although I'm not a novice with Wordpress, I read this book a few times and picked up some great tips. I think it's worth the price for a beginning to intermediate Wordpress blogger.

That said, Wordpress has awesome, voluminous online documentation in their Codex and forums, so there's not a lot of new info in this book that can't be found online, but it's presented in an easy, logical, and very portable way.

Also, since the publishing, WP has upgraded to version 2.1 which has slightly changed the admin interface, but not enough to make the book confusing.
