Book Reviews of Yoga Anatomy

Book Review: Very technical for the casual yoga practicer
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this book on the rave reviews but agree that if you just want to learn more about yoga poses and benefits, this book might be too technical. While I like the breakdown of the muscles used for certain asanas... the text refers to many parts that are not defined in the illustration.

It is an extremely "neat" book just to see the illustrations. I would recommend it if you have a good grasp of anatomy and are a teacher.

If this book could be improved for the layman, I would suggest labeling all the parts referred to in the text portion -- into the illustration.

Book Review: Excellent pictures but needs more details
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is worth its money simply because you will get to see the different muscles that are being used/worked in each pose. Additionally, for each pose the author makes very useful comments like the most common errors in the pose, or tips for how to get the most out of the pose. The anatomical vocabulary level is very high--someone with no background in anatomy would have a very hard time understanding the terminology. And not all the muscles that are discussed are labeled in the picture. Overall, I would have liked more poses featured, and more of a layman's description of what is happening.

Book Review: Excellent purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

I was extremely pleased with this book. Great biological-physical explanations of what happens in your body and how it works with yoga practice.
Full of nice illustrations which really exemplify and support what you're reading, so it becomes really much easier to understand stuff.

Not complicated at all, but still very explanatory. If you're into yoga and would like to know a litle bit more of what happens to your body, which muscles you work in different asanas, and how its beneficial to you , then I really recomend you get this. You won't be dissapointed.

Book Review: Deep Wisdom, clearly presented
Summary: 5 Stars

The opening chapter alone is worth the price of this book. Re-imagining ourselves as our cellular components, then comparing the processes of a cell to the processes of our bodies... wow! I had learned much about prana in my many years of practice, but this was my first taste of apana, sthira, and sukha! Truthfully, I find much less value in the detailed anatomical descriptions (very technical) and much more value in the author's philosophy, which is sprinkled throughout the book in chapter headings and side notes. A valuable addition to any yogi or yogini's library!

Book Review: Excellent anatomical guide
Summary: 5 Stars

Having studied anatomy for nearly 3 decades, I can appreciate the accuracy of the depictions and the muscles utilized in the described poses. Excellent resource to see exactly what the body is doing in the various poses. It is, however, not an instructional guide. Working backwards you can find the area(s) and/or muscle groups you want to affect and see what pose accomplishes that objective. Determining which muscles are being stretched and which are being contracted should be a quite simple and intuitive task after studying the drawings.
